Frequently Asked Questions About Voting

Why are there two Election Boards in Jackson County?
Kansas City is authorized by State Statute to have its own Election Board because it meets the requirements of a city that has more than 300,000 residents and is situated in more than one county.

The remaining area of Jackson County outside of the city limits of Kansas City was approved by legislation and signed by the Governor in 1917 to have an Election Board of Commissioners for this jurisdiction’s election authority.

How do I know where to vote?
In the week prior to each election, postcards with the poll building name and address are mailed to the registered voters in the precincts that have races or issues on the ballot. Six weeks prior to an election, the poll location and a sample ballot will be available on our website under our voter look-up section.
Why does the location of my poll change from election to election?
Each election, the Election Board reviews the ballot items, anticipates voter turnout, and consolidates precincts to a poll where those precincts are all voting on the same items. Voters need to read the poll notification postcards closely for each election.
Can I vote at a poll I drive by on the way to work?
You will only be allowed to vote at the poll location that has been assigned to you. This poll will have the correct ballot items for the voting districts of your residence.
When do the polls open and close?
All polls in Missouri open at 6:00 am and close at 7:00 pm. Anyone inside or in line at the poll at 7:00 pm will be allowed to vote.
Is there assistance for a voter covered under the Americans with Disability Act?
JCEB strives to use poll locations that are accessible to all voters. In every poll, special equipment is available to aid a visually-impaired person to vote. Assistance by someone accompanying the voter or by an election official can be requested.

If a voter can be driven, but it is a hardship to go into the poll, the driver can go in and request “curb-side assistance” for the voter. Election officials will bring all that is needed to the voter in the automobile.

If a voter, including any caregiver, cannot go to the poll, an “absentee ballot” can be requested. Click here for more information about voting absentee.

Can I vote early before election day?

Missouri Election law does not provide for early voting but does allow “absentee” voting for specific reasons the first four weeks of absentee voting. Click here for more information about voting absentee.

No excuse absentee voting begins the 2nd Tuesday prior to each election and requires no excuse to be stated.

Does my absentee vote count?
Yes, as long as all voting requirements are met and Jackson County Election Board receives the ballot by 7:00 p.m. on Election Day.

Absentee ballots are held in their sealed envelopes until Election Day, when they are opened and tabulated by election officials.

What identification do I need at the poll to vote?

Election Law states that before a voter can be given a ballot, the voter must present one of the following forms of identification:
